To my knowledge, the problem is a certain driver from Valve / Ambrosia that a lot of games seem to rely on. And there's no good way of knowing beforehand, either. Basically, when buying a title, there's about a 50% chance that over Bluetooth, the game won't acknowledge the gamepad at all. I mostly play Mac-native games from Steam or GOG.

I'm using a PS4 controller and my experience has been very… hit or miss. TL DR – if you don't need the fancy tech (touchpad & gyroscope), avoid the DualShock 4. TL DR: it works great except you won't be able to remap buttons X is Y, Y is X, B is A, A is B. S (Switch) and D (Android) modes: in short, I can remap the buttons in these two modes, but it doesn't do me much good as the controller doesn't actually work in game. Maybe the games that showed PS symbols won't do that in this mode at least? I forget if i tested it. X mode: this is Windows/XBox controller mode which has the same problem as the Mac mode in that the buttons are reversed and you can't remap. I tried the other three modes for kicks and didn't have success. I emailed 8BitDo and they say a future Mac update will allow you to remap in 'A' mode.

So a game might say to press the triangle or the circle, which is even more confusing.

On top of that, some games will show you PS controller symbols because the controller gets detected as a PS4 DualShock. So if an in-game notice says 'Press A to punch' it's actually the button labeled B that you need to press. I normally wouldn't care, except the button labels are reversed. I got an 8BitDo Pro 2, it's mostly great and I love the feel, except in the Mac mode (there's a switch to change between four different modes the Mac mode is labeled 'A') the provided software doesn't let you remap the buttons.
